5 September 2008 - GLOBAL ILLUMINATION

September 1, 2008

ESTEE LAUDER COMPANIES GLOBAL ILLUMINATION 2008:
PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON RESEARCH

This October, Australia will glow pink throughout Breast Cancer Month to raise awareness of the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s (NBCF) annual Pink Ribbon Campaign.  For the first time in the event’s seven year history, Australian Universities will be illuminated to represent the critical role of research in increasing our understanding of breast cancer.

Ms Sue Murray, NBCF CEO explained the campaign’s new direction.

“Global Illumination has always been a unique way of raising awareness of breast cancer among the community.  Illuminating the Universities acknowledges that ongoing, sustained research is what holds the key to unlocking the mysteries of this devastating disease, which claims the lives of more than 2,600 women and 95 men in a single year.

“Australian Universities and Research Institutions are producing some world class results in breast cancer research.  This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight that to the broader community, and encourage their continued support,” Ms Murray said.

The Global Illumination event was initiated by the Estee Lauder Companies to light significant landmarks and monuments around the world pink – from Niagara Falls, to the Torre di Pisa in Italy, to Table Mountain in South Africa, to the Sydney Opera House – raising vital funds for research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Australia has participated in this program since 2002, illuminating the Sydney Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and Australia Square in Sydney, the Exhibition Buildings, Federation Square and the Crown Casino precinct in Melbourne and the Storey Bridge and the City Hall in Brisbane.

A red carpet fundraising event is held in each city to coincide with the illuminations.  On Friday 31st October, QDeck atop Q1 the World’s Tallest Residential Tower, will host the inaugural Gold Coast event.  This strictly limited event will combine with a range of local business to provide an unforgettable night of pink elegance – Sky High 2008.  The all inclusive tickets are priced at $125 per head and will allow event attendees the opportunity to experience the observation deck prior to the official start of the function.
